Scent as an Anchor
"In the fog, scent is a direct wire to the present moment."
Strategy
01
The 0.1 Second Shift
Unlike sight or sound, which are processed through multiple filters in the brain, smell is the only
sense that has a direct pathway to the limbic system—the part of the brain that manages emotions and
survival instincts. For those living with FND, a specific scent can act as a hard-coded "safe"
signal, bypassing the noise and grounding you in less than a second.

02
The Scent Palette
Calm: Lavender & Wood
Best for high-anxiety or
"Boom" phases. These scents help dampen overactive signals.
Focus: Peppermint & Citrus
Best for "Fog" or "Bust"
phases. Sharp scents pierce through cognitive haze.
Ground: Bergamot & Frankincense
The "Grounding Anchor." Deep,
earthy, and bright scents perfect for maintaining stability and preventing overstimulation.
Strategy
03
The Rescue Deployment
Choose one specific scent and use it *only* when you are feeling calm and safe. Your brain will
begin to associate that exact smell with safety. When the world gets too loud or the fog rolls in,
introduce that specific scent to force a recalibration.
"Inhale presence,
exhale the noise."
