The Golden Rule: You are safe.
Non-Epileptic Seizures (NEAD) and Functional Paralysis are some of the most terrifying symptoms. But they are a software crash, not hardware damage. You are safe.
During the Aura / Onset
If you feel the aura or warning signs (dissociation, heavy limbs, extreme brain fog), drop to the floor immediately. Gravity is your safety net. Do not try to make it to the "comfortable" spot if it's too far. Just get low.
Safe Positioning
Ensure there is nothing sharp around your head. If someone is with you, have them place a soft cushion under your head, but they should not hold you down or restrict your movement. Let the nervous system process the storm.
When Non-Verbal or Paralyzed
Pre-communicate with your support network. Keep a link to the Communication Cards saved on your phone's lock screen or home screen.
Establish a simple physical signal (like squeezing a hand twice, or blinking twice) to mean "I am conscious, I am safe, I just can't move."
Do not force the reset. Functional paralysis fades quicker when the brain stops receiving "panic" signals from your attempts to force movement. Instead, try to focus entirely on deep, slow exhales.
The Wipeout Phase
The post-episode recovery (wipeout) is a crucial period. Your nervous system has just run a marathon. Sleep, heavy blankets, and absolute sensory darkness are mandatory. Do not judge the duration of the wipeout; your baseline will return in time.
"You don't have to fight the
storm.
Just outlast it."
